Background and Motivation
This project is focused on Butterfield Valley. A small watershed near Hokah, MN. The watershed is located within the driftless region of the upper Midwest, which is defined by steep wooded gorges, valleys, and bluff. The watershed is 787 acres, made up of steep wooded hillsides that drain into Butterfield Creek, and cropland in flat areas. The creek experiences high flows in the spring and during large rain events, but is dry the rest of the year.
The Beranek family owns the majority of the watershed, and has farmed its land since 1887. Half of the farm is only accessible by crossing Butterfield Creek. Flooding during high flows damages the creek crossing and limits farm access.
